INSIDE NOVA: Arlington Legislative Delegation Likely to Stick with Northam Print

Last week's announcement by former U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello that he would challenge Ralph Northam for the Democratic nomination for governor seems unlikely to shake support for Northam by the Arlington delegation to the General Assembly.

All seven legislators – three state senators and four delegates – had endorsed Northam before Perriello announced his intention to run. As of press time, none has backed away from that support.

"I'm a fan of Tom," but "Ralph is such a better candidate," said Del. Patrick Hope (D-47th). "Head and shoulders the best."

Northam turned up at Hope's "Pancakes with Patrick" sendoff to Richmond on Jan. 7, working to serve up flapjacks and buttress support in what, until a few days before, had been seen as an uncontested waltz to the nomination. Also at the breakfast was former state Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple, who earlier had pledged support to the lieutenant governor and on Jan. 7 said she had no plans to change her mind.
