Arlington – The Virginia Elder Rights Coalition (VERC) has selected Senator Mary Margaret Whipple and Delegate Patrick Hope to receive its 2011 Annual Elder Rights Award, named after longtime Arlington County resident and elder rights advocate, Erica F. Wood.  Senator Whipple and Delegate Hope were both honored for sponsoring two bills in the 2011 General Assembly aimed at strengthening the rights of nursing home residents.  Del. Hope received his award from Kathy Pryor, VERC Chair and Joani Latimer, State Long-Term Care Ombudsman, at the May 17 meeting of the Northern Virginia Aging Network.

Delegate Hope stated, "I am so honored to be recognized by the Virginia Elder Rights Coalition.  As Virginia’s population ages, we will rely much more heavily on our nursing homes to provide care and it is important we take measures to protect the rights and safety of residents.”

Kathy Pryor, chair of the Virginia Elder Rights Coalition (VERC), said “Both Del. Hope and Sen. Whipple were perfect patrons because they cared about the issue and they were articulate advocates for the bills.”  She remarked that both are “The epitome of a legislator who is in the business for all the right reasons – because they want to make Virginia a better place for all its inhabitants.”

Delegate Hope concluded, “To receive an award named after my dear friend, Erica Wood, who has devoted her entire life to ensuring the protection and safety of older adults across the commonwealth, makes this honor even more special.”

House Bill 1818, a bill that seeks to provide information to family members of nursing home residents about family councils passed both houses and was signed into law by the Governor on March 23, 2011.  Another bill, House Bill 1486, to improve the nursing home complaint resolution process resulted in a stakeholders group convened by the Office of Licensure and Certification on complaint investigation issues -- which offered a significant opportunity for a “win” for resident rights.

Patrick A. Hope is a Member of the Virginia General Assembly as the Delegate from the 47th District representing part of Arlington County.  He serves on the House Courts of Justice Committee and House Health, Welfare, and Institutions Committee.
