Sun Gazette: Most Arlington Legislators Turn Thumbs Down on Budget Plan Print

Created:  Thursday, April 19, 2012  7:51AM

A majority of members of the Arlington legislative delegation voted against the two-year, $85 billion state budget that won final approval April 18.

Only Del. Bob Brink (D-48th) – who sits on the powerful House Appropriations Committee and as a result has a hand in crafting the budget – voted to support the budget, which won passage only after a senior Senate Democrat sided with Republicans.

The measure passed the House of Delegates on a 77-19 vote, picking up some Democratic support added to the body's large Republican majority. Local Dels. Patrick Hope (D-47th) and Alfonso Lopez (D-49th) voted against the bill when it came before them on April 17. Del. David Englin (D-45th) was not present for the vote.

A day later, state Sens. Barbara Favola (D-31st), Adam Ebbin (D-30th) and Janet Howell (D-32nd) voted against the budget bill in the upper house, which is split 20-20 between the parties.

Republicans managed to convince state Sen. Charles Colgan (D-Manassas) to support the budget bill, ensuring its passage.
