STATEMENT BY DELEGATE PATRICK HOPE ON HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE INCLUSION OF MEDICAID EXPANSION LANGUAGE IN PROPOSED BUDGET Print

NR 2013-06

For Immediate Release

February 3, 2013

Richmond – "The House Appropriations Committee proposed budget language is recognition of the importance of expanding the Medicaid program. Unfortunately, its rigid timeline is unrealistic and not likely to be warmly received by the federal Department of Health and Human Services. And for good reason.

While I strongly support reforming and expanding Virginia's Medicaid program, we can and should do these things simultaneously. My budget amendment to the House Appropriations Committee on Medicaid expansion would have done just that. It makes no sense to reform the program with half of the poor in and the other half out.  Over 300,000 of Virginia's poorest citizens are not political pawns. I urge the House of Delegates to seek to improve on this language to make this a more seamless process and not drag out this critically important decision."

Patrick A. Hope is a Member of the Virginia General Assembly as the Delegate from the 47th District representing part of Arlington County.  He serves on the Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee and House Health, Welfare, and Institutions Committee.
