Panel votes to spike sex conversion therapy measure

A subcommittee of the House Health, Welfare and Institutions Committee voted 4-1 Thursday to spike a measure sponsored by Del. Patrick Hope, D-Arlington, that would prohibit a health care provider from engaging in efforts to change the sexual orientation of minors younger than 18.

Hope’s HB 1135 would not have prevented adults from voluntarily engaging in conversion therapy efforts. It would not have affected prayer counseling by clergy either; only licensed therapists would not have been allowed to perform such treatment on youths under 18.
