Richmond Times Dispatch: ‘Conversion therapy’ bill fails in committee Print

Created:  Friday, January 31, 2014  12:00AM

A subcommittee of the House Health, Welfare and Institutions Committee on Thursday voted 4-1 to spike a measure sponsored by Del. Patrick A. Hope, D-Arlington, that would prohibit a health care provider from engaging in efforts to change the sexual orientation of minors.

Hope’s House Bill 1135 would not have prevented adults from voluntarily engaging in “conversion therapy.” It would not have affected prayer counseling by clergy, either; only licensed therapists would not have been allowed to perform such treatment on youths.
